IT and Mental Disorders

This is about a theme I always want to write about but never find time to dedicate to as I want to reason it wisely to avoid missunterpretations. So, as a previous disclaimer: I AM NOT A NEO-LUDDITE.

Photo is from Flickr (ario_j: Effect of understanding on mental entropy over time)

At the moment I’ll use this post as an ideas compilation, in order to gather more and more info for writting a proper text (if you’d like to add up…, just add up in the comments, you’re welcome to do so).

* Thesis: Human Beings are not ready for long distance shots of technological advances. Step by step, incremental well-dosed and callibrated innovations are better suited for its adoption.

* Facts to be analysed: increasing number of people suffering mental illnesses is related to increase in life-expectancy or is a matter of technological advance.

* Data:

          From The World Health Report. [ O ]

          From The Global Information Technology Report . [ O ]

          From the World Bank Datasets and the CIA’s WorldFactBook.

* Miscellania:

Let’s take a look to an interesting application of "queueing theory" explaining the basic model and its use on calculating the slope of tardiness for a website (is yours crashing?).

I always understood “utility” as a product/service you don’t realise you’re consuming until you’re cut off.

Money from Community! (II)

Probably answer given here, thanks to E.Dans’ blog.

Some business models are explained: "Freemium", Advertising, Cross-subsidies, Zero marginal cost, Labor exchange, Gift economy.

But the question raised in my previous post still remains: will we be able to monetarise it?.

Money from Community!

Posted in internet by Francisco Marco-Serrano @ Feb 18, 2008

It’s the Wikinomics era, ladies and gentlemen, not the sign of Aquarius. New business models have arosen to demolish the old style economy…, at least in theory. Someone could think it’s easy to establish a community, get it working, put some google ads and monetarise the toy (in the last year I’ve received invitations to join 3 or 4 social communities which later on I’ve never heard back again). This community related business is serious thing, nothing to take the mickey with as you will understand. Moreover, some firstly-it-was-thought-to-be-succesfulI business models (really?) are starting to pant (it has been suggested here); it seems Moore’s applies too to technology-related business models, not just the hardware these ones rely on!. So, will anyone be able to monetarise the community or the Bazaar will prove to be uncontrollable and we will move towards a "donation economy" as a business model? (sorry, I’m again changing thoughts without 2-weeks notice).
