Or, how I managed to set up my personal web server.
Do you remember “I told you i’m not a geek!!!”?. Well, I’m the following stage, installing Hipergate. In the meantime, find how I’ve set up the web server in Debian Sarge (note: as I’m just a newbie I don’t think I’m capable of giving the exact procedures, Google a little bit; this is not a HOWTO).
1) Apache 2.0.54: use “aptitude”.
2) Java 1.5: debianise with “java-package”/”fakeroot make-jpkg”/”dpkg” [Check The Crazy Squirrel website]. My JAVA_HOME is /usr/lib/java.
3) Tomcat 5.5.9: download to your drive (i.e. /usr/local/tomcat) and include the line “export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/java” in the “startup.sh” file.
4) Integrate Apache and Tomcat: I’ve found a lot of sites recommending this, since Apache is efficient for static pages while Tomcat is the best for dynamic contents.
What I’ve done is install the libapache2-mod-jk2 with “aptitude” and follow the instruccions in the file /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/jk2.conf; after messing around with the proposed example file workers2.properties I’ve been able to connect both servers (HTTP and JSP). Restart both servers.
And it’s working! …at the moment.
Carrying on with the Taylor’s biography reading, plus some other books I’ve being turning the pages of, I’ve just arrived to an interesting abstract of the last millennium labour productivity history:
1) At the beginning men were machines.
2) Then, machines helped men.
3) Afterwards, machines enslaved men.
4) Finally, men and machines have learned to cooperate.
Until when…?.
Are you an economist or an operations resarcher?. Anyway, even if you aren’t send me your name and e-mail address and I’ll send you an invitation to get one of the blooming GMAIL account invitation.
Please, don’t do it if you’ve already have one. We don’t want to kill the scheme.
I’ll see you later on my e-mail.
Yes, I’m stuck in the installation of Java in my Debian Sarge laptop.
I’m installing Hipergate 2.1 (a collaborative web-based application). This needs the following:
1) Apache [Web server] - I managed through “aptitude” (Apache 2.0.54 is now on Sarge).
2) Java [Servlet] - I’m trying to install version 1.4+ SDK, although I’ve been recommended to “debianize” the installation (that’s it, try to create the .deb package by means of the java-package + dpkg + aptitude).
3) Tomcat [Servlet container] - First I need to finish the Java installation, but once I’ve done it, I think it’ll be easy.
4) PostgreSql [SQL Database] - Version 7.4.7 available via “aptitude”.
I tell you when I’m done!
Ok, I’m an operations researcher, but my education has been as an economist. What do I mean with this?. Don’t know my dear colleagues; probably I’m trying to carry on with the peace process brought in the previous years on the battlefield of OR vs MS (Operations Research & Management Science).
I’m young for this, but I have read that time ago operations researchers (mainly engineers) and economists (mainly economists!) disliked each other. Probably this is on yet, any ideas?.
